5-8 - Minneapolis, MN

In Attendance: Laura, Alex, Amanda, and Katie

It’s summertime and I find myself back in Minneapolis for a second straight year. During my first visit I was able to explore Matt’s bar, known for the “Jucy” Lucy. That was the one of the many highlights of my trip to the Twin Cities with my family. I couldn’t stop thinking about how good that burger really was ever since. It comes up in conversation quite often. As soon as I found out that I was going to make it back to the area with a team of colleagues, my dream was to rally everyone up to review the 5-8 Club and the “Juicy” Lucy. My hopes were high with the experience I had at Matt’s Bar. That made me nervous going into this because I wanted everyone with me to have a burger that tasted just as good. The burgers are just stuffed with cheese. How different can they really be?

The 5-8 Club has a rich history with its origin as a speakeasy during early 20th century. Once prohibition was repealed, the club became known for its beers and burgers. The Juicy Lucy, spelled with an “i” in this case, is a cheese stuffed burger that has since gained popularity and the 5-8 has made this Twin Cities delight spread throughout the area with multiple locations.

Built on the idea of serving up a burger stuffed with molten hot cheese and giving a helpful serving of food with it, the 5-8 appears to make the people of Minnesota happy. Our experience was a decent one and leaves me with one clear taste for this kind of burger when visiting the area.

Meat: 3.5/5
The meat had flavor, but was dry. The Juicy Lucy was put together well with a pocket of cheese that had no evidence of cheese and meat fusion. I expected more of a molten mix and powerful cheesy meat taste. The bottom of the burger was lined with pickles that also left everyone wanting more tastebud excitement.

Bun: 3.5/5
White or pretzel. The pretzel was good, but the white buns are consistently cut ⅓ on the top and ⅔ on the bottom. It made eating the burger unsatisfying. Perhaps the thicker bottom bun and the pickle lining were thought to support the juiciness of the burger if it were not so dry?

Cheese: 3.5/5
American, blue cheese, pepper-jack, or swiss. Although you have choices for the Juicy Lucy, the cheese and meat relationship needs to seek counseling.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Bar and local brew. Their “snacks and starters” consist of a variety of sides ranging from crispy onion rings and fries to pickle chips and cheese curds. The onion straws looked delicious as everyone in the place continued to order them all around us. In our experience the star of the sides show were the sweet potato fries with marshmallow sauce.

Uniqueness: 8/10
This is a unique place to visit due to it’s history and style of burger.

Shake Shack - Las Vegas, NV (New York New York Location)

I have to start with two things: WHAT A BURGER and THERE’S ONE COMING TO DETROIT!

Shake Shack made its debut in New York City as a food cart inside Madison Square Park in 2000. Once they became popular, they ended up as an actual burger stand within the park. Now they have locations all over the place, and they’ve really exploded on the burger scene. They’ve gone public with ownership, and their stock is flourishing. Shake Shack just does everything the right way, from quality, healthy ingredients, to charity events and promotions.

They started their business by just selling New York style hamburgers. Once the popularity hit, they expanded to fries, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches (Chicken Shack), and shakes. Many locations also serve alcoholic beverages. Shake Shack is an East Coast thing. Thrillest.com once did an East Coast versus West Coast burger contest, pitting Shake Shack up against In-N-Out Burger. Last May, it was announced that a Shake Shack would open a Detroit location inside the First National Building in 2017. The location will be within walking distance from the popular Greektown portion of the city. This is obviously exciting news!

With its original location being in New York City, it would seem fitting to have a location at New York New York Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. After learning about the legendary Shake Shack of New York City, I was anxious to make this a part of my Vegas trip.

As for the Vegas location, and I’m sure they all work in the same way, it’s a total machine of hard-working employees. You stand in a long line, look at their menu, order, and watch the massive assembly line hammer it out. It’s a clean restaurant, and everything comes off the line hot and fresh. I ordered a double Shack Burger, and wow, I’m still thinking about it.

Meat: 5/5
Shake Shack uses all-natural, 100% angus beef only. Their meat is completely free of hormones and antibiotics. In fact, they pride themselves on the healthiest possible ingredients in the burger industry. I ordered a double cheeseburger, and all of their burgers are cooked to medium unless otherwise desired. They smash the burgers down on the griddle which forms some crispy edges. My burger came out just perfect, and the thing went down too fast.

Bun: 4/5
As you’d want, it just disappeared easily alongside the burger. According to epicurious.com, their buns are potato rolls from Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe, which is out of Pennsylvania. It’s toasted with some butter, and just exactly what you’d want.

Cheese: 4/5
The right amount of American cheese.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Crinkle-cut fries! If you like crinkle-cut, this is the place for you. They’re delicious. As for their shakes, they’re also delicious and made with frozen custard. They’re shakes are known as some of the best in the industry. I also saw many also ordering their concrete mixers. If you’re in a spunky mood, most locations have beer, wine, and even dog treats.

Uniqueness: 8/10
Shake Shack is a bit like Five Guys, Elevation Burger, BurgerFi, and all of the others, but they do it better. Trust me, it’s better in many ways.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 9.25/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 34.25/40

Many versions of the Jucy Lucy can be found all over the Minneapolis area, but it all started at Matt’s Bar. A simple description of the Jucy Lucy consists of a cheese stuffed burger. Imagine two fresh meat patties surrounding a golden collection of American cheese. Matt’s Bar does it just right and the end result is an oozing masterpiece.

When we arrived it was the beginning of a lunch rush. We met the line at the door and it soon backed up outside in a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis. Matt’s Bar has been serving up the Jucy Lucy since 1954 and it’s one heck of a tasty burger!

Matt’s is a bar atmosphere that a burger lover searches high and low for. The grill, tucked in the corner, hits your senses as soon as you walk in. It reminded me a lot of Miller’s in Dearborn with its neighborhood feel, history, and low lighting. As you look around you will find wood panel walls covered with flair based on their success. A “no ecigarette” sign breaks up the monotony. Tables and booths surround your every move. There are craft beer taps and they take cash only. Listen up for occasional music, most notably Led Zeppelin, to get you in the groove. You’ve gotta love their motto, “no ice, no plates, we blew the budget on napkins”. A classic feel keeps up with the times and it all combines for the perfect ambiance.

There’s a simple menu with the Jucy Lucy at the apex. It’s served on a wax paper and condiments are tableside. Get ‘em in, get ‘em out, yet everyone is friendly. It’s good to see all of the fame hasn’t tarnished their business.

Meat: 4/5
A double walled patty with a char grilled taste around a treasure of cheese. Definitely order with onions (diced) for taste.

Bun: 3/5
Simple white bun that is the right size for the job. Pickles help line the bottom of the meat to preserve the integrity of the bun.

Cheese: 5/5
How it's created makes it the best it possibly can be. Oozy American cheese that creates quite the experience.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Craft and local taps. French Fries.

Uniqueness: 10/10
What else could someone possibly be looking for? This is a unique experience with a legendary burger.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 10/10
I don’t hand out a perfect 10 that much and the taste is all that, maybe more.

Knoxville is no joke. They have the crazy Sunsphere “disco ball” tower from the 1982 World’s Fair, but the landmark from the highway is just the beginning. The University of Tennessee sits alongside the banks of the Tennessee River, and all you have to do is go downtown Knoxville to get knocked around. There are a lot of hip, fresh, and vibrant bars and restaurants lining Market Square.

Stock & Barrel is a burgers and bourbon bar that sits in the heart of Market Square in Knoxville, TN and they serve up some juicy, tasty burgers. With only one night to spend in Knoxville, my crew landed in the right spot.

The place was packed when we arrived at 3:00 pm. We waited for a table at the bar quaffing some local brews. Soon we had menu in hand and specials recited. After looking at the menu, I had to go with the burger special of the day, the La Flama Blanca. This is a burger with avocado, jalapenos, mushrooms, and pepper jack cheese. Most everything on this special I would never invision tasting good on a burger, as I’m not a big fan of avocado and mushrooms. I took a chance with the excitement of the fact that I was on vacation and had to try something new. Plus, the burger held the same name of Kenny Powers’s Mexican nickname. I couldn’t go wrong, that’s for sure.

All of our burgers were delicious. Jerry said that it was “the best burger he’s had in a long time” and Meredith stated that she “ate the whole thing, which is good”. I felt similarly with the success of my burger. It was fresh and delectable, even with the exploration of toppings.

Meat: 4.5/5
Locally sourced, grass fed beef. Cooked to perfection, just how I ordered it.

Bun: 4.5/5
Toasty and from a local bakery owned by a place down the street. So good.

Cheese: 5/5
Nice amount and selection.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
It’s a bourbon bar and they have craft taps. Hand cut fries and beer battered onion rings, yum!

Uniqueness: 7/10
This place is trendy burger destination in a trendy location. Market Square is happening, but is viewed in my eyes as the place to be seen, or should I say, can be seen almost anywhere at the same time. The burgers and vibes make it worth the visit.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 9/10

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 34/40

Random Shots: When visiting this place make sure to save some time to bar hop. The surrounding bars have a variety of different beer taps and rooftop seating for people watching. Heck, I even recommend taking the time to walk over to the Sunsphere and take a look from up top. It’s worth the time!

BLT Burger - Las Vegas, NV

This past summer I took my first trip to Las Vegas. Obviously, there was going to be much fun to be had, but a burger on a vacation always seems to work its way in. There are no shortage of burger joints in Las Vegas. Before I went, I received some recommendations from others, and I also ran into many burger joints while roaming around the strip, Freemont Street, and beyond.

I didn’t want to place a burger joint into any sort of itinerary while in Las Vegas. It didn’t feel right and I didn’t want our trip to take a detour due to intense burger hunting. I needed to wait for one to fall into my lap.

After a few close calls at other burger establishments, my wife and I decided to take a pool break at our hotel, The Mirage. BLT Burger, one of their in-house restaurants, seemed on our radar for lunch. This wasn’t what I intended to have happen, but like I said, I was going to let a burger come to me on this trip.

So, BLT Burger it is. There are BLT (Bistro Laurent Tourondel) Burgers in Las Vegas, New York, and Hong Kong. They seem to pump up their their burgers and spiked milkshakes.

We found some great spots at their bar area, which also overlooks a massive grill for their burgers. The whole area near the bar is specifically for their burgers. Everything else is done in the back. They had toasters for their buns, and everything else you can imagine for an all-out burger grilling setup. It was probably one of the coolest things I’ve seen while on the burger trail.

We ordered, ate, and went back to the pool.

Meat:  4/5
They use never frozen beef and their ½ pound patties look more like ¾ pounders. I ordered it medium, and medium it came.

Bun:  4/5
Toasted nicely and it was definitely fresh.

Cheese:  3.5/5
Typical selection with the typical amount.

Sides and Beverages:  4/5
My wife and I were not overwhelmed by their fries, and we didn’t try a shake. From what I’ve heard, I’ll make sure to try a shake next time. Your choice of a side does not come with your burger, so look out there. However, they do have cool combos that will tack on an order of fries and a beer, or even a shake. There’s a decent amount of starters and sides.

Uniqueness:  7.5/10
We loved sitting at the bar by the huge grilling area!

BURGER TASTE RATING:  7/10
For some reason, this one just didn’t resonate with me. Everything created an appearance that we’d have a home run on our hands, but it left me wanting more. Although cooked to medium, there just wasn’t any juiciness. Overall, with all the hype and a master chef looking out for the place, I left a little disappointed.

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE:  30/40

Random Shots:
With all the burger joints in Vegas, I’m excited to try another one next time. My short list includes the Heart Attack Grill on Freemont Street (downtown) and Bobby’s Burger Palace on the strip.

I’ve been scoping out Berger’s for a few years now. It’s hard to work in a burger stop while in Toledo when my mother-in-law cooks up a storm whenever we’re in town. In preparation for a night on the town at Toledo’s Winterfest, I finally payed a visit to north Toledo’s Berger’s Bar for an early dinner.

Berger’s is located in a strip mall near Jackman and Laskey. A family owned neighborhood watering hole since 1993, Berger’s fits the mold of a cozy bar with good food.

During our visit a variety of burgers were ordered. A few specialty burgers are available in addition to the ½ lb. burger they feature on the menu. I stayed consistent and ordered a ½ lb. burger with MKP, American cheese, and an order of O-rings.

After a short wait while watching yet another college football game, our burgers were served. I instantly noticed and appreciated the handcrafted patty. After a few bites I was delighted to see that my burger was cooked perfectly and tasty. Ordering the O-rings paid off as they were the perfect complement to the burger. I have a feeling that I will be hitting up Berger’s again in the future.

Meat: 4/5
Handcrafted, nice apperance, cooked to order.

Bun: 2.5/5
Nothing special here. The size of the bun is okay, yet I’m waiting for a bakery style or some other sort of bun treatment to complement the burger. A light toasting would do wonders.

Cheese: 4/5
American, Swiss, Cheddar, Hot Pepper, or Monterey Jack. Just right. Melty.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
A simple bar lineup of beverages. Nice to see local brew with Maumee Bay 5 Hole on tap at the time of my visit. Hand dipped O-rings and delicious fries.

Uniqueness: 7.5/10
Quintessential neighborhood bar stop with a fresh look.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 8.5/10

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 30.5/40

Random Shots: The Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority, known as TARTA, runs a shuttle for Mud Hens and Walleye games from the Kroger parking lot right across the street. After much anticipation, I finally had the opportunity to eat at The Wood House. It was my second day in Bismarck, North Dakota. My best friend Nate has been telling me about this place since the day he moved out there.

We went at an off peak time, 2:30pm to be exact, so we could make it a family affair. This place is nothing flashy from the outside and it was pretty low key inside. During lunch and dinner, the line can reach out the door. We sat at a corner booth and Nickie, Nate’s better half, explained to me how things work. Basically, you are on your own when ordering. They have menus mounted on the wall at each table and a phone for you to call your order in. We compiled a list of food on a piece of paper and then picked up the phone. In the distance you can hear the phone ring. Eventually someone picks up the phone and takes your order. Drinks arrive at the table and soon burgers follow.

I ordered a double cheeseburger, french fries, and a vanilla shake. One look at my burger and I was ready to plan another trip to Bismarck. After one bite of my burger, I couldn’t stop eating. The burger was delicious! It was one juicy bite after another of pure beef smothered in cheese. I could feel my heart slow down and I would take a break to wash it all down with a swig of milk shake. It took me no time at all and my plate was all empty. I leaned back and savored the flavor with good company.

I recommend The Wood House to be at the top of any burger lover’s list when visiting. I’m excited to go visit North Dakota again because there are a few other burger places throughout Bismarck to check out.

Meat: 4/5
100% Pure Dakota Beef ground daily! Juicy, good, local tasting burger.

Bun: 2.5/5
White, perfect size, lightly toasted.

Cheese: 3/5
Only 2 choices, American or Swiss. Good amount.

Sides and Beverages: 3.5/5
Fries, o-rings, broasted potatoes. The milkshake is worth ordering for sure!

Uniqueness: 8/10
As mentioned above, this place is low key. The phone ordering is unique and makes the experience one of a kind. It’s definitely worth the time of any burger enthusiast.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 9/10

My wife is from Toledo and it’s always hard for the family to get out to eat when you have a mother-in-law that not only cooks great, but always makes enough for an army. When my father-in-law’s birthday rolled around we decided to head out to one of the places he really likes in Toledo, Burger Bar 419. My father-in-law is no stranger to a good burger. I’ve heard about this place for quite some time from him. What a perfect time to take the kids, chill out, and have a tasty burger. Our visit took place during lunch on a cold Saturday in February with not a whole lot of action to brag about, except for their burger.

We all ordered something different off the menu. I stuck with my simple burger and ordered the Classic American burger avoiding all the fancy burgers. They explain it as “the usual; just better” on the menu. That is just what I look for in a burger. I added an order of batter fried onion pedals to get a variety of sides with the rest of the group.

During our wait with cold beverage in hand, the atmosphere was at the early stages of mid day Saturday. Slowly people trickled in and filled the place up. The sweet sounds of classic rock filled the air. Plenty of televisions surrounded the main bar area for our viewing pleasure. Dreaming of warmer days, we looked out at the summer patio and bar area. Garage doors line the wall, accommodating visitors to enjoy the warmer months of the year. Too bad we were there at less fortunate climate.

When our order arrived, we didn’t carry on much of a conversation because we were very much into our burgers. The burger was darn good. It was tender, juicy, and made me want to immediately come back again. I was impressed with the onion petals and fancied the hand cut fries I sampled from other plates. T-Town has a lot to offer in the form of entertainment with sports and other attractions. Make sure you include Burger Bar 419 in your visit.

Meat: 4/5
Fresh, local ½lb ground beef. Nice texture! Tasty, juicy and cooked to order.

Bun: 2.5/5
Toasted and fresh. The perfect size!

Cheese: 3/5
It depends what kind of burger you order. Just the right amount of American cheese covered my Classic American burger.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Full bar and plenty of interesting sides to choose from. Hand cut fries, onions pedals, granny apple slaw, sweet and tangy slaw, and hot kim chee.

Uniqueness: 8/10
The menu offers plenty of interesting burger choices and add-ons. Burger Bar 419 seems to be the place to be at night or during warm weather. This place paints the perfect scene to take a date or even go out to have a burger with your friends.

BURGER TASTE RATING: 8/10

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 29.5/40

Random Shots: The kids burger is worth the visit alone. They give more meat on this kid size than most burger places put on their full size burger. Also, this place sits way off of Monroe Street. Look for the sign on the road, turn in, follow the arrow, and keep driving.

New York City. The Big Apple. More like the Big Burger. New York knows burgers and with so many places to choose from, what does one do? I made the choice easy, I consulted Hamburger America and made plans to hit the legendary J.G. Melon.

J.G. Melon can be found in the Upper East side of Manhattan gracing the corner of 3rd Avenue and 74th. The location was a perfect fit for our museum mile day as we knew that we would be extremely hungry after a long day of hitting some of the greatest museums in the city. Dine in for the full ambiance or sit outside to enjoy the neighborhood during nice weather.

The burger is absolutely delicious. I feel that we would have thought this even if we hadn’t spent all day walking all over the city working up an appetite. Served on an opened faced toasted plain bun, Melon’s burger is a hand crafted, cooked to order patty that is served hot off the grill. Sweet red onion and pickles await your burger construction process along with table side ketchup and New York mustard (think grey poupon). I highly recommend you order a side of potato chips to accompany your meal and beverage. They are truly delectable. My wife, Melissa, couldn’t get over how delicious her burger was. She claims that it may even be the best burger she’s ever had.

There’s a lot to know about New York and this is one place worth learning more about. Plan to pay a visit on your next NYC trip to taste one of the more delicious burgers that I’ve had to eat.

This is one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time, and to think it came from Wine Country!

In 1999, brothers Joel and Duncan Gott decided to lease out the shut-down and iconic burger stand called Taylor’s Refresher in St. Helena, CA. When they reopened it, they called it Taylor’s Automatic Refresher. After some legal battles, they were able to turn the burger stand into Gott’s Roadside in 2010. From there, they’ve opened locations in Napa and San Francisco, and Gott’s Roadside has become Napa Valley’s go-to burger.

When my wife and I planned our vacation to San Francisco and Napa Valley, I quickly grabbed my copy of Hamburger America to see what burgers I was going to try. In-N-Out Burger and Gott’s Roadside won, and I’m sure glad Gott’s made the cut. We happened to drive right into Napa around lunch time, so it was time to get some Gott’s.

At the Napa location, Gott’s has that roadside burger stand feel, but only larger. You walk in, take a look at their giant menu on the wall, and order at the counter. Finding a seat can be a problem, especially around lunch time. They have a huge assortment of tables both inside and out. The inside actually feels a little bit like you’re outside due the kind of tables and decor they have. We grabbed a table outside, and about ten minutes later, our food arrived on trays.

Meat:  4.5/5
Wow, this is quality fresh meat. The beef is 100% Angus that’s vegetarian fed. It comes from California’s Niman Ranch with no hormones or antibiotics used. All patties are ½ pound and are served medium-well with a little pink inside.

Bun:  4.5/5
It’s a bakery fresh egg bun, which makes this a little unique. It was soft and toasted. Delicious.

Cheese:  4.5/5
A nice amount of cheese was applied to the burger. Choices are Cheddar, Blue, Jack, and Swiss.

Sides and Beverages:  4/5
If you are at the Gott’s in Napa or St. Helena, you’re right in the heart of a wine drinker’s paradise. Might as well save some wine tasting for at Gott’s. They also have a really big line of local brewed beers on tap. Beyond the bar, their shakes are pretty popular. I tried their chocolate shake, and it was pretty tasty. As for their sides, the onion rings were just decent, but their garlic fries were really good. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that much garlic on fries before.

Uniqueness:  7.5/10
The three Gott’s Roadsides are all pretty unique. As stated above, I had the pleasure of eating at the Napa one, but I also drove by the original one in St. Helena. My next trip to Napa Valley will definitely include a sit-down meal at the original Gott’s, the one in St. Helena.

In-N-Out Burger - Various Locations, US

While on vacation in San Francisco and Napa Valley, there were two burger joints I wanted to hit. Maybe surprising to some, a fast food spot was one of them. But, if you are unfamiliar with In-N-Out Burger, it’s anything but your typical fast food.

Opening their first restaurant in Baldwin Park, California in 1948, In-N-Out Burger has built a strong reputation and following in the southwest United States. Originally only having restaurants in California, they’ve expanded to a few other states. Their strong following comes from many unique characteristics.

First of all, it’s fast food that’s all fresh. Everything, and I mean everything, is as fresh as it gets. That’s breaking the mold for a fast food joint. Heck, when I was there, I saw one employee in the back with a huge bag of onions, cutting them up into slices with a knife. In-N-Out Burger is also known for how they treat their employees. They are one of the few, if possibly the only, fast food restaurant that starts their wages already above minimum wage. During my visit, it was obvious that the employees were happy campers. I noted to my wife that I had never seen such a well-oiled machine at the counter and in the back. They all worked together in such a seamless fashion. The place was beyond busy (Fisherman’s Wharf - San Francisco location), and the employees, mostly young, held things together with no issues. I’ll repeat, I’ve never seen such a well-oiled machine of workers before. It was impressive.

In-N-Out’s menu consists of three burger varieties: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, and “Double-Double”. That’s all.  But, and hold on for this one, In-N-Out has a secret menu at most of their locations. It varies from spot to spot, but I’ve heard about people ordering the 4x4 burger and the Animal Style fry.

As for my order, I kept it pretty simple. I was going to be eating a nice meal about an hour after visiting In-N-Out, so I just ordered the cheeseburger, which comes automatically with their special sauce. I’m looking forward to doing a big In-N-Out experience in the future (secret menu, fries, etc.).

Meat:  3.5/5
You’ve got to give them points for being fresh fast food.

Bun:  3.5/5
In-N-Out uses toasted buns that are freshly baked using slow-rising sponge dough.

Cheese:  3.5/5
According to In-N-Out, their American cheese is the real thing.

Sides and Beverages:  3/5
Their sides are limited, but they do them right. Their french fries are hand-cut and cooked in 100% cholesterol free vegetable oil. Shakes are made with 100% real ice cream.

Uniqueness:  8/10
Discrete Bible verses on their paper products, having the first two-way drive-up speaker system in California, and all mentioned above makes In-N-Out Burger a pretty unique burger experience.

BURGER TASTE RATING:  6.5/10
In the end, even with the freshness, I still found it to taste a little like your typical fast food burger. The special sauce added some nice flavor, but something about it kept it inside that fast food realm.

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE:  28/40

Random Shots:
I have a lot of respect for In-N-Out Burger and all that they stand for. They treat their employees and customers with respect, and everything’s fresh at this fast food burger chain. There’s a strong possibility that In-N-Out Burger remains as the only fast food chain that appears on our website.

Le Tub - Hollywood, FL

Visited during lunch on Monday, October 8, 2012

Well, where do I start? It could be in a million places.

Le Tub, located about 30 minutes north of Miami in Hollywood, FL, was once voted by GQ Magazine as the #1 burger in the county. Wow, now that's saying something. So, when a family wedding came up in West Palm Beach, FL, I knew Le Tub had to get on the itinerary.

Located on a stretch of the A1A, Le Tub sits tucked within lush greenery (you have to see the picture of this to really visualize it). Even though our Garmin was taking us straight to the place, we almost missed it. According to Le Tub's website, many locals have been driving by the place for years and don't even know it's there. Le Tub now sits on what used to be land occupied by a Sunoco gas station. The history of Le Tub states that the new owner of the land built the saloon by himself over the course of a year. The place is covered with bath tubs and toilet paraphernalia, and it's impressive multi-level wooden structure makes for a very unique environment.

Through a few different sources, we had conflicting reports on to what the actual hours of Le Tub was. We showed up around 10:45am and were told that they weren't going to open until "around 11:30 or 11:45". It seemed super casual, and we were good with it, even though their website said they were opening at 11:00. But, this is the kind of place Le Tub is. They'll open when they're ready, and you just better sit tight.

When they were ready, we traveled through the lush, green paths. Along the way we saw a toilet seat that said "Seat Your Self" and tons of other things that were definitely worth taking a photo of. As mentioned before, there are several levels to the place, and all are made of worn wood. The platforms, the seats, and the tables are all made of that same worn wood that the owner once hand-constructed himself.

After working our way through the place, we found a table that overlooked the Intra Coastal Waterway. As I looked around, I saw someone hand-grinding the beef for the day. Also, the cook had his own level, which was actually lower than the main seating levels. He was stationed in a very small pit-like area. George Motz, in his book Hamburger America, wondered how the cook doesn't pass out from the heat of the grill in that lower level pit.

After taking it all in, it was ordering time. If everything wasn't unique enough, here plops this hand-created menu that seems to be produced via copy machine. It's made from someone's handwriting and it appears that they just sat down one day and made a menu. Written on the menu, very clearly, is a message that tells the customer that he/she should be prepared for a long wait if they order a burger. They go on to state that they do not serve fast food, and the will not let the "wildly increasing demand affect the quality" of their cooking. Motz, in Hamburger America, told a funny story about how he sat down at Le Tub while a friend was hopping off a plane at Miami International Airport. Motz ordered for them both, and when the friend arrived at Le Tub, the burgers still weren't ready. In my case, I'm not sure if it was because they had just opened and there wasn't much of a crowd, but my burger only took about 10 minutes to prepare.

Their sirloin burger is what most order, and it's a 13oz. masterpiece. As I was ordering, the server noted that she's entered plenty of "burger comas" after finishing it. She mentioned the fact that she'll often take a nap break in her car. Served on a soft kaiser roll, Le Tub's sirloin burger is charbroiled, seasoned, and made to order. It comes standard with onion, tomato, and lettuce. Add anything else you need and you're in business.

When the burger came, it was served on a paper plate with a plastic fork and knife, and it looked absolutely wonderful. The cheese was oozing over the meat and it delicious and massive. I threw on pickle, ketchup, and mustard. It was time to go to work. As I ate it, the one thing I noticed was that the burger actually became larger as I moved toward the center. The meat grew thicker, and it kind of gave that perception that it was going to be an uphill battle, literally. Right then and there I knew that GQ Magazine was right, and this was indeed a very special location and burger.

Meat:  5/5
It's as fresh as it gets and I saw it being hand-ground right there on their back patio overlooking the water. What a scene. It's ground top sirloin, seasoned, charbroiled, and cooked to perfection. They don't care how long it takes, they'll grind it and cook it the right way.

Bun:  4/5
A very soft kaiser roll and the bottom basically disappeared due to the juice from the massive 13oz. of ground top sirloin.

Cheese:  4.5/5
American or Swiss are your two choices and an overabundant amount is used. The cheese was placed and melted to perfection.

Sides and Beverages: 3.5/5
I don't think Le Tub is known for their sides. I grabbed some fries to go with my burger, and they were pretty good. They were served on a paper tray. It definitely completed the paper theme with the burger also being served on a paper plate. Their fries and mozzarella sticks are fried in peanut oil. On the drink side, it's tough not to enjoy anything when at an outdoor saloon that peers into the Intra Coastal Waterway.

Uniqueness: 9.5/10
This was an easy five out of five. Everything is completely unique, right down to the menu. If you order water, you'll have to take a walk to the water cooler to fill your small plastic cup. The multi-levels as you walk throughout keep you guessing, toilet seats and tubs are all over the place, and their take-no-crap attitude can't be matched. I really appreciated the fact that even though their popularity has grown tremendously, which means they are much more busy now, they still don't care how long their burgers will take to prepare. They will make them the right way every single time.

As I stood in the parking lot, about to get in my car, I looked back at Le Tub one more time. It's crazy that through all of that lush is an actual outdoor restaurant/saloon. Check out the picture in the photo gallery of the blog to see what I mean. The actual view of this place is really something to see.

BURGER TASTE RATING:  10/10
Charbroiled and cooked to perfection, Le Tub is a tough one to beat. Although it's already been mentioned, I'm still thinking about how the meat actually becomes thicker as you eat towards the middle. If on the eastern coast of Florida, definitely make a trip to Le Tub.

Wilson's Sandwich Shop - Findlay, OH

After purchasing a copy of Hamburger America by George Motz (see blog), any trip Kevin or I take now revolves which burger joint can be hit while on the road. We map out or route and immediately look at the state by state listing from Motz's book. This is how I stumbled into Wilson's Sandwich Shop located in Findlay, OH. My wife and I were headed to Nashville, and Findlay was right on the way.

Wilson's Sandwich Shop is legendary throughout the Findlay area. According to their Wikipedia page, Wilson's actually started as a spin-off to the Kewpee Hamburger chain. Hoyt "Stub" Wilson opened Wilson's in 1936 and it's been the place for hamburgers ever since. When we arrived, it was right during the heart of the lunch rush. Their drive-thru was packed and we could literally hear the burgers being ordered. Inside is a true diner feel. On the opposite side of the drive-thru is a long counter of stools that sit next to a long window. Tables scatter the place and it had a true local sense. I could tell that those in there frequented Wilson's often.

We hit the counter to order and that's where the fun began. Ordering is a systematic approach and we had some fun with it. It doesn't seem like they have a computer or ticket system, because we were re-asked quite a few times what we had ordered. Having old women at the counter is tradition for Wilson's, and please don't make them mad. They have really good prices - a cheeseburger is only $2.20, and you can make it a "special" for an additional 40 cents, and that includes lettuce, tomato, and mayo. I made my cheeseburger a special and it was go time.

Meat:  4/5
Their meat is ground fresh right at Wilson's. They still use the square patty approach that they took from Kewpee years ago. Here's a fun fact - Wendy's took their square patty approach from Kewpee too.

Bun:  3/5
A traditional bun.

Cheese:  3/5
No choices at all, but there was a decent amount on it.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Wilson's is also known for their malts. I had one, and I'd say it was more like soft served ice cream. I was expecting something more along the lines of a malt/shake. However, though not what I expected, I can't complain. They also have a wide variety of sodas and juices. As far as sides go, they have plenty. Aside from their fries and onion rings, they seemed to have a pretty good handle on cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad, etc.

Uniqueness: 7/5
This whole place is pretty unique. Probably the most unique part of the place is that the men's bathroom is actually located on the outside of the building. That's right fellas, if it's not unlocked, you just have to grab the key from the counter. If you're a woman, your bathroom is located inside.

BURGER TASTE RATING:  7.5/10
I truly regret not getting a double, and I wonder if that would have boosted the burger taste rating. I asked the woman at the counter how big a single was, and she thought 1/2 pound. That wasn't the case as it came out much smaller. Even so, this was a solid, well-constructed burger. But if I go again, I'll be getting the double for sure.

Tessaro's - Pittsburg, PA

It can sometimes be difficult to find the right burger joint when traveling. Let's face it, there's a lot at stake. You want a good burger first of all and an even better experience to add to your travels. Thanks to my wife, Melissa, and her excellent researching skills, we made plans to visit Tessaro's.

Located a short drive outside of Downtown Pittsburgh in Bloomfield, Tessaro's makes it well worth exploring the surrounding communities. Bloomfield is home to Little Italy. There are many things to check out here. The area really gives you a strong cultural feel. The buildings and houses are unique and you can find an art gallery and an Italian grocery store for your pizzells.

Walking into Tessaro's we immediately found it to be the sort of place we would frequent. It's an older brick building with a beautiful ceiling. The lighting is low, the tables are covered with canvas blue jean, the frequent sound of a bell alerts the wait staff of an order to be picked up, and you need a map to find the bathroom (which is nice and clean). Upon my venture to the bathroom, I was heckled for wearing my Detroit Tigers road jersey by the kitchen staff. I was asked to take it off. It was all in good fun. I didn't even want to strike up a conversation about hockey. I am still trying to get over game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final.

A short time after we ordered, our burgers were at our table ready to eat. Love at first site! It looked delicious. With an appetite growing from the long drive, I nearly forgot to take a picture. I dressed my burger up with a dash of ketchup (Heinz of course) and a bit of mustard. The mustard was more of a dijon mustard. We found that to be the norm over the entire trip.

The fresh bakery bun houses a bite filled with flavor. I knew immediately that this burger would rank among the top just because of the taste of the fresh ground beef that they prepare daily. The cheese is good. Just the right amount.

Meat:  4.5/5
Tasty! The burger leaves you wanting more.

Bun:  4.5/5
Bakery fresh, soft, and really good, however it was a bit over sized.

Cheese:  3.5/5
Variety. Laid back.

Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Sides are home fries, chips, potato salad, coleslaw, or broccoli. Full service bar.

Uniqueness: 8/5
This place is unique. Not only is it one heck of a burger, but it has an interesting kitchen over looking the dinning room, bizarre bathrooms, and good people watching if you get a seat in front of the window.

BURGER TASTE RATING:  9/10
Like I said, it's a darn good burger. One of the best I've tasted.

B Spot Burgers - Cleveland, OH

B Spot Burgers, owned by Iron Chef Michael Symon, is quickly becoming a very popular burger chain in Ohio. In fact, Symon tweeted with Michigan's Burger Boys that he's looking to put one near Detroit because he believes "many great people live there and there's tons of city pride". Right now, there are three B Spot Burgers and they are all located in Cleveland, OH. Symon's credentials are endless. He's a former Iron Chef winner on the Food Network, and he's now even hosting shows, including Iron Chef and Food Fueds. With this guy's fingerprints all over B Spot Burgers, how can you go wrong?  B Spot Burgers has been the winner of the Best Burgers in America at the Sobe Wine and Food Fest in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Seeing that before ordering makes anyone fired up to give one his several menu burgers a whirl.

When you walk into B Spot Burgers, there's plenty to look at. Everything in the place is modern and just plain cool. There's a huge wall filled with beer cans, and they've all been put together in a way that creates a giant red B in the center. Right near the door is a pickle bar. That's right everyone, a pickle bar!  There's about eight different kinds of pickles to choose from once your burger has arrived. I thought this was a neat idea. Overall, the place has a good vibe - a little restaurant, a little bar. It's a cool place and I hope one arrives into the Detroit area soon.

At press time, there are 16 different kinds of burgers on the menu. They range from a simple hamburger to the Yo! burger. All of the burgers are uniquely named besides the traditional ham/cheeseburgers. One of the most unique things I've seen at a burger joint is the Smasher's Special burger. This is a burger based on the kitchen's whim, and the menu says that prices vary. This is really, really neat and who knows what kind of burger will end up at your table. On my next trip, I'll be doing this for sure, and who knows what I'll get or pay!

I ordered the double cheeseburger, which appears to be my go-to of late. When it came, the first thing that caught my eye was that it was not a hand-crafted patty. Maybe it's just Kevin and I, but we really value a patty of meat that's hand-made. It puts a signature, a personal touch, on the burger. I headed to the pickle bar, did some experimenting, and came on back to the table to tackle the burger that's won "America's Best Burger" at the Sobe Wine and Food Fest for three years in a row.

Meat:  3.5/5
There's no doubt that B Spot Burgers uses the finest quality meat they can get their hands on. Symon tweeted us that they "certainly use the best product". And the meat was tasty, for sure. But the pre-made patty, at least for me, knocks this down a touch. I ordered it medium-well, and it was cooked right to that.

Bun:  4/5
One option for the bun, but it was definitely a quaility piece of bread. It was toasted, which we love.

Cheese:  2.5/5
To be honest, nothing memorable here. Just your typical kinds and amount of cheese.

Sides and Beverages:  4/5
Plenty of sides to choose from. There are three different kinds of fries, B Spot Onion Rings, wings, and everything else one would need. I ordered their Lola Fries, and they were impressive. Very good seasoning and my wife claims they are "the best fries she's ever had". When you look beyond the burger, this is a pretty cool bar. It has all the drinks to suit anyone. In fact, they have a pretty large selection of beverages. Based on their menu, it appears they even specialize in shakes.

Uniqueness:  6.5/10
Uniqueness is everywhere at B Spot Burgers: A pickle bar, six different sauces at your table, every category on the menu starts with a B, the beer can wall, coloring pages with burgers on them for the kids, they take your order electronically, rolls of paper towel at your table, a sign for the bathrooms says "Sanitary Bathrooms" with a huge arrow pointing you in the right direction, and even an Andy Warhohl spin-off featuring burgers (did they steal this from The Full House in Ypsilanti?).

BURGER TASTE RATING:  7/10
This was a pretty good burger. For some reason though, it just didn't hit me as a great or memorable burger. Those with me completely agreed.

BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE:  27.5/40

Random Shots:  The Burger Boys would really like an answer to this question: Why use a device to pre-form patties of meat?  Why not have them hand-crafted? Not a huge knock to those that have them pre-made somehow, but why do it that way? We're curious.
