Green Dot Stables - Detroit, MI

Green Dot Stables is a place we’ve heard about for quite some time. We had heard many cool things about the place, and it’s been recommended to us on many occasions. Figuring it was time to check it out, I was able to throw it into the itinerary for an already planned Detroit visit with my buddy, and MBB correspondent, Gerbe. It’s located in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, and it features an equestrian theme. In fact, our server told us that the building used to actually be a spot where horse race gambling took place. Now, Green Dot Stables has that full theme going, and even their TVs only air horse racing.
Aside from that quick history tour, Green Dot Stables is really known for some fair-priced restaurant-style sliders and drinks. All of their sliders are $2-3, and they’ve got a ton to choose from. As mentioned, these are restaurant-style sliders, so they differ from the likes of Bates or Hunter House. At Green Dot Stables, their large variety of sliders ranges from cheeseburger to fried bologna. Trust me, they have you covered, and then some. Also, they’ve got a rotating mystery meat slider option that’s pretty popular and is always a definite conversation piece.
Their drink menu also features excellent prices. Their draft beers are all $3, and they have a lot of nice craft options. Their bottles of beer are all $2-3. All cocktails are only $3. All in all, plan on spending about $3 on each slider and drink, sit back, and have some fun.
Between my Gerbe and I, we were able to check out about eight different sliders. I was going to focus in on the cheeseburger one for review purposes. We also ordered most of the fry options, and yes, you guessed it, fries are $3 as well. After ordering, you realize that Green Dot Stables is a great place to order a bunch of stuff and just try everything out for a pretty affordable price.
Meat: 2.5/5
I actually thought the meat was a bit dry. Unfortunately, the burger just wasn’t juicy at all. It had the look and the potential to be a little more special than the actual taste. Even so, I’m looking forward to trying their cheeseburger slider again.
Bun: 4/5
Restaurant-style slider buns that fit things well.
Cheese: 4/5
Different kinds of cheese come on different sliders.
Sides and Beverages: 5/5
Green Dot Stables earns a perfect 5 in this category. They offer four kinds of fries, and I’d like to suggest the truffle and herb flavor. They’ve got soups, salads, and other sides, and once again, they’re $3 each. Their huge drink menu at only $2-3 a beer or cocktail will meet everyone’s needs.
Uniqueness: 9/10
This is a true destination, plain and simple. The history and current theme and decor creates a really cool vibe. It’s got that dimly-lit look happening as well.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 7/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 31.5/40
Grease Rating: Very Low
Random Shots:
From what we’ve heard, this place can get really, really busy. They have a great patio that is most likely packed during the nicer months of the year. Also, at press time, Green Dot Stables was working on a location in East Lansing.

Hunter House Hamburgers - Ann Arbor and Birmingham, MI

Visited on Monday, September 29, 2014
Hunter House Hamburgers is Michigan’s original slider. That’s a huge statement, and Hunter House has been on our short list for quite some time. According to their website, Hunter House Hamburgers was established in 1952 featuring the original slider – a little hamburger with juicy, sweet onions smashed into the meat and the buns steamed hot. They now have two locations; the original is in Birmingham and their newest location, established in 2014, is in downtown Ann Arbor.
This new location gives lunch and dinner patrons, and late night enthusiasts, a fresh new look on an old time classic. They even now have a catering service and the Hunter House Mobile Diner. Their original location looks pretty much like it did in the 1950’s. It’s a diner-like, white and black restaurant that’s been serving sliders since 1954. Hunter House creator Al and Martha have kept things family oriented, as their grandson opened up the second location in Ann Arbor. We figured it would be fun to see the newest spot in the growing Hunter House name.
As stated above, their newest location is right downtown Ann Arbor. Before hammering away at some sliders, we visited Ashley’s for a few adult beverages. Ashley’s is known for their large number of craft beers on tap. From there, it was a quick walk around the corner to Hunter House. Right when you walk in the door, you feel Detroit. There are pictures of Detroit landmarks, sports and beyond, and there’s even a set of seats from the old Tiger Stadium. When you walk in, you also notice the connection to the original Birmingham location through photos and memorabilia. Nice touch.
We went to the ordering station and loaded up. We ordered way too many sliders for even two grown men to eat. Add on some fries and tater tots, and we were good to go. Lucas made sure to grab a shake made with Detroit’s Stroh’s ice cream as well. We found a window counter seat that faced William Street, the best way to eat this style of burger in Kevin’s opinion, and it seemed to be an evening where many locals were in Yoga mode.
Meat: 3.5/5
Their meat comes straight from Detroit.
Bun: 3/5
Straight from Detroit too. It was your typical slider bun.
Cheese: 3/5
Not enough cheese to make us happy.
Sides and Beverages: 3.5/5
Thier fries and tater tots were average. Lucas’s shake was pretty good, but not worth making a special trip for.
Uniqueness: 8/10
It’s Michigan’s original slider and they pride themselves on supporting the city of Detroit and its suburbs. This is definitely the place to hit after a late night on the town, and you might even end up using their take-out window after hours.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 8/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 29/40
Grease Rating: Low

We’re excited to also check out their original location in Birmingham. We appreciate Hunter House’s continued interest in Detroit traditions and history.

Bates' Hamburgers - Livonia and Farmington Hills, MI

Slider joints are not places where you hang out for quite some time chatting it up with your buddies. They are meant for you to order a bag to go, or sit down, eat few, and hit the road. Bates’ Hamburgers hits this right on the head. Whether you’re thinking take-out or eat and go, they’re ready for you. Plan on your food being prepared very fast as a constant train of customers floats in and out.
Bates’ Hamburgers has been serving customers their sliders out of their Livonia or Farmington Hills establishments since 1959. If you go on their website, you’ll see they’ve got a pretty modern logo and overall look. But if you drive by or go inside their restaurants, especially the one in Livonia, you’ll see a more old-school diner feel. We personally visited the Livonia restaurant, and it does take you back in time. It’s that cookie cutter, stainless steel, porcelain palace that many slider joints have followed. Kevin noted that it’s remarkable similar to another slider joint, Telway.
We walked into Livonia’s Bates’ Hamburgers on a very rainy night, and we’re sure the guy at the take-out counter was happy that it was fully enclosed. We walked around the corner, away from the take-out area, to the main entrance at the direct corner of Farmington and 5 Mile. We opened the door and walked into slider heaven. As mentioned above, things happen fast at slider joints. When you walk up to order, glancing below and to your right will land you a nice view of their flat-top grilling station. They’ve got loads of burgers, caramelized onions, and buns all cooking and warming simultaneously. Lucas ordered first - two cheeseburgers, fries, and a chocolate shake. Within literally 10 seconds, his shake was on the counter. Kevin had the same basic order, but went for a Coke to drink. The food came fast and we were eating in no time.
Meat: 4/5
Spatula-patted meat that’s cooked to near perfection. It was the expected amount for a slider-style burger. We were told that their meat comes in from Mike’s Meat Emporium.
Bun: 4/5
Soft, steamed, greasy, and therefore, glazed!
Cheese: 2.5/5
You’ll get ½ slice of American cheese placed on your slider.
Sides and Beverages: 2.5/5
Fountain pop, water, or chocolate shakes are your beverage options. The chocolate shake was pretty good, but nothing to bring someone back in for. They serve up crinkle cut fries with a chili fries option as well.
Uniqueness: 8/10
The Livonia establishment has a true 1950’s diner feel. It’s worth the trip just to sit at the counter or on one of the stools in the window looking out at the busy intersection.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 8/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 29/40
Grease Rating: Med-High
Random Shots: Bates’ Hamburgers only takes cash, so be prepared. Also, no bathrooms, so that’s another thing to be prepared for (but once again, slider joints are not “hang-outs”). The cheeseburger sliders are priced at just $1.34 apiece. We just couldn’t resist - Lucas pounded a third cheeseburger right before leaving and Kevin grabbed a sack for the ride home. We did the “drive-ability” test back at Kevin’s, and they survived the car ride well and still tasted great.
Kevin, visiting several slider joints lately, made two points:
1. This was a very clean slider joint.
2. Their restaurants may look very similar, but Bates’ sliders are better than Telway’s.

Sliderz - South Lyon, MI - [CLOSED]

Housed in a Citgo gas station, Sliderz has been servicing the South Lyon area for just over a year. It’s unique in the sense that you can fuel up, buy your lotto ticket, and get a bag of sliders. This is the ultimate convenience store for the slider junkie. The sliders can be ordered individually, in sacks of 6, or sacks of 9 with optional fries and drinks on the side. Do it as a walk-in customer or hit the drive thru to maximize your experience. Heck, if you call in your order before you pay at the pump for your gas, you really don’t have to go inside at all.
The sliders are served hot and fresh off the grill. I walked in and ordered a sack of 6 (3 with cheese and 3 without) and a medium french fry to go. It was ready within a few minutes and I could see the grease start to penetrate the bag as soon as it was in my possession. I ate one in the car to get an immediate feel for the slider as it tasted hot of the grill and then I let the rest of the bag marinate on my drive home. This is something that I think all sliders should do. It allows for, in my opinion, all of the juices to ooze out and create a more flavorful slider.
With every bit I was pleasantly satisfied. It had a fair amount of tasty meat between a bun that answered the call. The sliders were yummy and the cheeseburger sliders provided an additional flavor burst that was much appreciated. The next time I am in South Lyon to visit “The Chad”, I will be sure to hit the Sliderz drive thru for a sack.
Meat: 3.5/5
Seasoned and grilled with onion for a tasty meat slider. An occasional burnt onion taste, but nothing new here as far as sliders are concerned.
Bun: 4/5
The bun was the right size, fresh, and handled the grease.
Cheese: 4/5
Melty and just the right amount.
Sides and Beverages: 3/5
Fries (crinkle cut), chili fries, cheese fries, or onion rings.
Uniqueness: 5/10
It’s a slider joint in a gas station.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 8/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 27.5/40
Grease Rating: Medium-High
Random Shots: Even though this place is a gas station, it is clean and convenient. It seems wrong for a slider place to feel this way.

In Attendance: Kevin's Dad
I’ve been going here for years with my dad. We sit at the same table (if available) each time and always get great service. What’s not to like? It’s a friendly, fast, fifties style slider joint. The question is, how many sliders to order? Back in the day I could go for 4, maybe 5 in one visit. Now I take it easy with 3, but my dad keeps it light as he only orders 2 these days.
These burgers are easy to eat. Yes, they slide down. They are pre fab, fresh patties, that are grilled up in a flavorizing way. Grilled onions are a must! It takes about 5 minutes or less for your order to arrive. The waitress usually makes a joke about taking too long (seems like the joke that keeps on being told is a staple in burger joints). I like to toss the optional pickles on top and dress it up with swirl of ketchup and mustard. Dig in!
If you are looking for a sit down style slider joint with decor that fits an old fashioned theme, and provides great service, look no further. They even have a drive thru for those of us that are in a hurry.
Meat: 3/5
Tasty. Sometimes there is a “well done” flavor associated with the onions.
Bun: 4/5
The right size! Good and fresh. The grease factor gives the bun a “glazed” look.
Cheese: 2.5/5
They have it and it's a fair amount.
Sides and Beverages: 3.5/5
Fountain pop. Crinkle cut fries with a chili cheese option. I wish they had o-rings.
Uniqueness: 8/10
This is a true 50’s diner feel. The donkey statue has its own room.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 7/10

Vinnie's Hamburger Stand - Canton, MI

Reviewed by Kevin and Lucas
Visited on August 14, 2012
Resting just off eastbound Michigan Avenue in Canton, a blue and red sign that simply reads “HAMBURGERS” greets slider enthusiasts. With well kept grounds, an American flag proudly flying in the air, and enough neon lights to make you wear shades at night, Vinnie’s creates a walk back in time with this dream slider joint.
Walking up to the building you can’t help but notice that the burger stand is a stainless steel frame from the 1950’s. The facade of Vinnie’s was purchased from the east coast and transported on a flatbed truck. Once you walk through the corner door entrance, what you see inside is a stainless steel wonder.
We’ve had nice conversations with Vinnie’s wife. She is always friendly and really enjoys selling burgers to burger patrons. During our visits she has filled us in on how they travel around the area and the U.S. eating burgers. One of their favorites is the White Mana Burger in New Jersey, which inspired them to come up with the idea to create the delicious burger that they serve at Vinnie’s Hamburger Stand.
Sit on a stool at the counter or choose a window seat to watch the traffic. Look above the counter for a simple menu. You will find a “No lettuce, tomato, mayo” sign posted on the wall as you plan your order. The biggest decision is whether or not to ask for your sliders to be “dressed” or “undressed” with their special sauce (mustard+ketchup+secret). Your slider will be cooked within a few feet from the counter. Watch as they pull out their fresh ground beef and smack it on the grill top. In a short time you will have your order and the sliders will melt in your mouth.
Meat: 4/5
Fresh and seasoned well.
Bun: 4/5
Brown’s potato bun that is a nice fit for this burger.
Cheese: 2.5/5
American Slices that aren’t melty.
Sides and Beverages: 3.5/5
Sides include crinkle cut fries with the option to select chili cheese. Styro foam fountain pop and old school milk shakes in the beverage department.
Uniqueness: 10/10
This is one heck of a creation. Hand built from the ground up and a true time machine feel.
Grease Rating: Low
BURGER TASTE RATING: 8/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 32/40
Random Shots: "Drive Up" is available. They call it a "Drive Up" and not a "Drive Thru" because good burgers take time to prepare. Call ahead for a seamless pickup (734) 961-9000. Open 6 days a week with a sign stating “see you in church” on Sunday. Vinnie also owns a sub shop on Michigan Ave near I-275.

Your slider will be cooked within a few feet from the counter. Watch as they pull out their fresh ground beef and smack it on the grill top. In a short time you will have your order and the sliders will melt in your mouth.

Seeburger's Cheeseburgers - Mt. Clemens, MI

In Attendance: Kevin's Dad and Brother
When you see these burgers, you will like what you see. This has to be the premier slider in all of Metro Detroit. It is good, greasy, and won't disappoint!
Kevin's dad discovered this place one day over a year ago and hasn't stopped talking about it since. He even went as as far as mailing the Burger Boys a paper menu for research. Well, on a hot day in June, Kevin finally met with his dad and brother to see what Seeburger's Cheeseburgers is all about.
A basket of 11 sliders, an order and a half of onion rings, and pop. The grill fires up and away we go. Sit down and peer over the glass to take a first hand look at the grill. Fresh ground beef is smacked onto the grill top and onions are jammed into the meat to make one delicious slider. Grease is flowing and your shoes are sliding on the floor (be careful).
Order up! The baskets are filled and are now sitting on our table. We couldn't get over what an amazing masterpiece lay before us. It just looked so good. It's a dream basket of sliders and arguably the best onion rings around. Yes, that's right! The best onion rings around. Just imaging large, fresh onion rings battered with a fair amount of cooking oil from the fryer. It takes some work to eat one, but it's well worth it. The sliders have the right amount of everything. The meat is hearty and well seasoned with really tasty onions. Don't let me forget about the cheese. It finishes the slider and is delicious.
This place is a must! The Michigan Burger Boys highly recommend this place for the slider enthusiast.
Meat: 4/5
Grilled fresh ground beef with caramelized onions. Tasty and greasy.
Bun: 3.5/5
Fresh, moist, and steamed. One option that's just the right fit.
Cheese: 3.5/5
American. Infused right into the burger. Delicious.
Sides and Beverages: 4/5
Soda fountain and some bottled pop. Fries and the BEST onion rings!
Uniqueness: 7/10
Fits well in the Mt. Clemens downtown.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 9/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 31/40
Grease Rating: Medium-High
Random Shots: While watching the grill, you can slide around on the floor. Grease is prevalent throughout the entire restaurant, but goes with the territory. Kevin's brother, David, gives the burgers two thumbs up on the re-heat ability. O-rings are best eaten cold when taken home.

Telway - Madison Heights, MI

The Telway, located on the corner of John R and 11 mile in Madison Heights, is a legendary slider spot. Open in 1959, Telway sliders have seen their fair share of changes. The area around the building has grown drastically and the slider has changed as well. It is easy to say that visiting 20 years ago leaves a more positive burger taste than what you can find today, but don't let that stop you from getting your one of a kind burger experience here.
When we say on the corner, we mean on the corner. After you place your order at the counter, turn around and you can sit on a stool facing 11 mile and soak it all in (the grease and the environment). Cars pull up at the stop light and then jet off while you eat. It's all right there in front of you. While enjoying your slider you are bound to see a few cars that will generate some conversation. They do offer limited counter spots up front and a take out window for those of you in a hurry. Just remember to bring a plastic bag to double up your order if your worried about your car's interior.
Now, the slider. It's hard to rate this one because childhood memories of a great slider are so strong. We recommend 2-3 sliders to satisfy your needs. Anything more and you're going a little too far. Onions? Yes! Cheese? Not necessary, but available. Mustard, ketchup... you can dress it a little. The soft bun hides the meat inside. It is highly seasoned and tasty in an interesting way. An unusual buttery sensation leaves you wondering what is going on after you consume one of these bad boys.
Don't forget to compliment your sliders with a side order of fries or onion rings. Both are average at best, but you need to eat a full meal remember. Wash everything down with a tall pop and now we're talking!
In all honesty, the Telway may not be a top rated slider stop on our list, but it is one that is riddled with history and is quite unique. We recommend that you attend if you are any kind of burger enthusiast.
Meat: 2/5
Fresh ground beef, small, salty red seasoning.
Bun: 2.5/5
Big (the bun eats up the meat), buttery, and soft.
Cheese: 2/5
Yeah, they have cheese, but not needed here in our opinion.
Sides and Beverages: 2.5/5
Fries, chili fries, and onion rings. Fountain pop.
Uniqueness: 8/10
Legendary! Don't forget to bring a plastic bag if ordering take out.
BURGER TASTE RATING: 6/10
BURGER EXPERIENCE SCORE: 23/40
Grease Rating: High
Random Shots: Telway keeps you covered. While dinning in you can keep track of time on the clock tower across the street and then visit the CVS or Walgreens next door for some antacids.
